Benton, with a population of 976 (2000), lies in the heart of America's dairyland, with its gently rolling hills, lazy streams, and rich soil. Steeped in the rich traditions and culture of the early lead miners, it owes its very existence to the mining industry. Families from England (especially North Yorkshire and Cornwall), Wales, and Ireland emigrated to southwestern Wisconsin in the 1820s to 1880s to work in the pioneer lead mines. [more]
